Inspired by the rural way of life in her home county of Herefordshire, England, L. Lloyd creates original artwork about horses and equestrian sports such as horse racing.
She aims to portray the majesty and beauty of horses in a photo-realistic style with her own artistic spin.
Whether it's the athletic thoroughbred, the hard-working Clydesdale, or the diminutive Shetland pony, they're all on her list of subjects to paint. She also enjoys painting donkeys and even zebras—all equine family members.
Her preferred mediums are soft pastels, artist-grade coloured pencils, and watercolours.
“When I paint horses in pastel and pencil, it feels like I’m sculpting their majestic forms on the page, and it’s amazing to see each portrait or scene come to life in this way. All members of the equine family, including donkeys, mules, ponies, and zebras, are, in my humble opinion, the most fascinating subjects.”

Bio
Born in 1976, L.Lloyd is a self-taught artist and amateur photographer who lives next to the scenic River Wye in the rural English county of Herefordshire, encircled by green hills and fields. She has developed a fulfilling professional career in the health service since 2002, although she has always loved the arts. She studied art in school, but subsequently "life" got in the way for many years until an antique wooden box of Rowney soft pastels was found in the attic. Although she was initially unsure about how to utilise these, it set off an epic exploration into their creative use, complimentary mediums like coloured pencils and watercolours, and her reacquainting with the fundamentals of art and composition. Her favourite themes to paint are portraits of animals, especially horses.
She went through a trying time of illness between 2019 and 2024 that kept her from doing the things she valued, but now that’s behind her, she's determined to make the most of life. Despite not being fortunate enough to own horses, she attends National Hunt fixtures at nearby courses in Hereford, Cheltenham, Chepstow, and Ludlow, and looks out from the window towards horses grazing in nearby farm fields. She is currently focusing her artistic endeavours on honing her equine art, and she particularly appreciates the excellent works of Ninetta Butterworth and Franco Matania.
Winter 2024 saw her become a Friend of the Society of Equestrian Artists to pursue her passion for equestrian art and to provide any assistance she could to this nonprofit organisation.
Whenever feasible, she uses her own photographic images to inspire her work. Otherwise, she only utilises reference images for which she has prior permission, as well as royalty-free and copyright-free photos from sites such as Unsplash and Pexels.
Although she mainly paints for enjoyment, she will happily take commissions if someone requests since all her artwork is created using the finest lightfast pigments on museum-quality, acid-free surfaces. She would then donate 25% of the proceeds to The Donkey Sanctuary and The Horse Trust, two UK charities she already supports.
